اثری که پیش رو دارید یکی از آثار متفاوت و شایسته نقد هاروکی موراکامی، نویسنده شهیر و موفق ژاپنی است. نویسنده در این داستان با زیرکی و در عین رهایی، انسان را از منظرهای گوناگون به زیر ذره‌بین ادبی خود برده و روزمره‌گی‌های انسان را با کالبدشکافی استادانه‌ای مورد تحلیل قرار داده است.

بحران میانسالی در تمام آثار موراکامی جایگاهی همیشگی را به خود اختصاص داده است. همچون بسیاری دیگر از رمان‌های این نویسنده، در این اثر نیز شخصیت اصلی هنگامی به دانشگاه راه یافته بوده که ژاپن در گذار تمدن خود از منظرهای گوناگون دچار تحولات کلیدی شده بوده است. مقوله جنگ و تحول فرهنگی که پایه و اساس فکری نسل جوان، نه تنها در ژاپن بلکه در تمام جهان را طی چندین دهه پیش از این دچار دگردیسی کرده، تأثیرات عمده‌ای بر ایدئولوژی، باورها، انتخاب‌ها و منش زندگی جوانان آن دوران داشته است و…

«در فاصله‌ای بسیار دور، صدای هتل دلفین سابق را مانند قطاری شبانه می‌شنوم. صدای غژغژ لولاهای روغن‌نخوردهٔ آسانسور که بالا می‌رود، بالاتر و می‌ایستد. کسی در راهروها راه می‌رود، کسی دری را باز می‌کند، کسی دری را می‌بندد. بله! هتل دلفین سابق بود. می‌توانستم با اطمینان این را بگویم. زیرا که من بخشی از آن بودم و کسی برایم گریه می‌کرد. برایم گریه می‌کرد چون خودم نمی‌توانستم گریه کنم.»
