اندیشههای ماکس وبر دربارة عقلانیت در مرکز کار جامعهشناختی و نیز در مرکز چشمانداز اخلاقی او قرار دارند. اما این اندیشهها نه بهسادگی در دسترساند و نه بهسادگی قابل فهم؛ بعضاً به این علت که وبر هرگز آنها را نظاممند نکرد، یا به این علت که با آثار او معمولاً به صورت تکهتکه برخورد شده و آثارش بهندرت در تمامیتش مورد بررسی قرار گرفته است. قصد این کتاب بازسازی بحث عقلانیت، عقلگرایی و عقلانیشدن به شکلی نظاممند است تا تاثیر متقابل عمیق و مبهم میان کار جامعهشناختی و دیدگاه اخلاقی وی را روشن کند.
راجرز بروبیکر، نویسنده این کتاب، وبر را به مثابه متفکر معاصر ما تفسیر میکند که کارش سرتاسر مسئلهٔ مدرنیته را وحدت و انسجام میدهد. «مسئلهٔ مدرنیته» شامل مسئلهٔ تاریخی خاستگاه مدرنیته، مسئلهٔ جامعهشناختی ویژگیهای منحصر به فرد ریخت فرهنگی و نهادی مدرن، و مسئلهٔ اخلاقی چگونهراهبردنِ یک زندگی معنادار و ارزشمند در عصر مدرن است. هدف بروبیکر این است که تشخیص و تحلیل جامعهشناختی و اخلاقی وبر را از مدرنیته بکاود.
برو بیکر استاد جامعهشناسی دانشگاه کالیفرنیا در لوسآنجلس (UCLA) است. آثار وی در زمینههای نظریهٔ اجتماعی، مهاجرت، قومگرایی، ملیگرایی و شهروندی است. از او مقالات زیادی در نشریات معتبر اروپا و امریکا منتشر شده و جوایز بسیاری نیز به وی اعطا شده است.
شهناز مسمیپرست، مترجم کتاب، فارغالتحصیل رشته جامعهشناسی از دانشگاه ایندیانا است. او را به عنوان مترجم کتابهای گئورگ زیمل میشناسند. از ترجمههای پیشین او میتوان این عناوین را نام برد: «درباره فردیت و فرمهای اجتماعی»، «مقالاتی درباره تفسیر در علم اجتماعی»، «مارکس و ویتگنشتاین: پراکسیس اجتماعی و تبیین اجتماعی»، «ماکس وبر و کارل مارکس» و«دورکیم مرده است.
